Isiah Thomas Fired as New York Knicks Coach and General Manager

Isiah Thomas

Team President Donnie Walsh fired Isiah Thomas as coach of the New York Knicks. Walsh said during a late-afternoon conference call. “I value Isiah and his knowledge of the game, and he will remain with the organization, reporting directly to me.” Thomas lost a franchise record-tying 59 games this season, and along the way seemed to lose the support of his players, who didn’t always play hard for him the way they did last season. Things began to go downhill from the time training camp opened. The jury came back with its verdict that day, finding that Thomas and MSG sexually harassed former team executive Anucha Browne Sanders and ordering the company to pay $11.6 million in damages. Criticized by Al Sharpton and Rutgers women’s coach C. Vivian Stringer for comments he made in his taped deposition, Thomas seemed downcast during most of training camp. He also feuded with point guard Stephon Marbury and benched center Eddy Curry.  With Chants of “Fire Isiah” coming from fan starting minutes after home games his position as coach and general manager came to an end.

Mark Jackson, the former Knicks point guard, hinted that he might like to coach the Knicks, and got the approval of former Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy. Donnie Walsh, the new Knicks president, fired Isiah Thomas as coach on Friday and confirmed that Jackson was a candidate for the job. Walsh said it would take “a special person” to overcome a lack of coaching experience. But he has hired rookies in the past, including Thomas and Larry Bird in Indiana.

Mark Jackson — born in Brooklyn, a star point guard at St. John’s and a Knick for five seasons has obvious appeal in New York. The Knicks drafted Jackson with the 18th pick in 1987, and he teamed with Patrick Ewing to lead them into the playoffs the next five years. Jackson retired in 2004 with the second-most assists in N.B.A. history.  Jackson was often lauded as an intelligent player who served as a virtual coach on the court.  Former NBA standout Mark Jackson is also a game and studio analyst for ABC broadcasts of the NBA.  Jackson serves as a studio analyst for the NBA Sunday Countdown pre-game show on ABC with host Dan Patrick and analyst Michael Wilbon from the site of the ABC NBA Sunday game broadcast each week.  Jackson provides analysis during the game, paired courtside with ESPN and ABC lead play-by-play commentator Mike Breen.
