Cobra Benefits Covered

Posted by TSUE on February 25, 2009

The below information is very important for those cancer patients who are currently enrolled in a Cobra Plan and those ex-employees who might be in need of coverage. Cobra insurance is very expensive and the additional relief is a welcoming opportunity to those who pay this high premium out of pocket.

To update you on The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, signed into law by President Obama on February 17, 2009, is a $787 billion stimulus bill. One of the many provisions of the bill is to directly provide relief to millions on the COBRA plan or ex-employees who need COBRA coverage. This “COBRA stimulus plan” will provide enrollees a COBRA premium subsidy along with providing COBRA benefits to ex-employees who denied coverage.

What is Cobra?

Cobra, was put into law in 1985 to help workers who lost their job continue their health insurance. Basically, it gave the ex-employee the ability to continue their employer sponsored health insurance plan. The insurance stayed the same but the entire premium was to be paid by the ex-employee.

The First Part of The COBRA Stimulus Plan: Reduced Premiums

The COBRA stimulus plan basically has two parts. In the first part, The COBRA stimulus plan will be able to step in and help struggling families trying to pay their COBRA benefits. People who are currently enrolled in the COBRA plan will get a 65% reduction in their premium costs. This will be a huge savings to many families struggling to keep their COBRA benefits.

Part 2: The Ability to Re-Enroll into COBRA

The second part of the COBRA stimulus plan will provide recently unemployed people the ability to re-enroll into the COBRA plan, even if they had denied coverage in the past. This will help a great amount of people who choose not to continue their health insurance through COBRA because they just could not afford it.

9 Key Details about the Cobra Stimulus Plan

1. Valid for people who were involuntarily terminated between September 1, 2008 and December 31, 2009

2. To be eligible annual income cannot exceed $125,000 for a single person and $250,000 for a couples

3. 65% of existing COBRA premiums will be subsidized by the U.S. Treasury Department

4. Subsidies will be available for up to 9 months

5. If you declined COBRA coverage after September 1, 2008 you will have the option to re-enroll into COBRA with the above subsides

6. Notices of the COBRA subsidies and re-enrollment information will be sent from the COBRA administrator (usually your previous employer)

7. Subsidies will be paid, via a refundable tax credit, directly to the COBRA administrators

8. Subsidies will terminate if the enrollee acquires a new health insurance plan through another employer or is eligible for Medicare

9. Subsidies will only apply to COBRA premiums paid after the effective date of February 17, 2009 and there will be no refund of premiums prior to this date

Especially important during these stressful economic times, Center for Urban Community Services (CUCS) Single Stop programs offer free financial counseling and a range of other services for lower income individuals and families in three Manhattan neighborhoods: W ashington Heights, East Harlem and Central Harlem.  The following are tips for low income New York families to survive the economic crisis:

  1. Don’t’ panic. Instead, see a professional such as an advisor at one of CUCS’ 3 community Single Stop Centers or any of the 59 Single Stop Centers in the Single Stop USA Network funded by the Robin Hood Foundation throughout New York City.  Single Stop staff can assess your situation and inform you of your options on a complete range of financial and legal issues.

  1. Make sure you are accessing all the benefits you or your family are entitled to. Many households=2 0do not apply for things such as food stamps, free or low-cost health insurance and heating assistance, even though they are eligible and the receipt of these benefits could make a huge difference in their ability to remain healthy and stably housed.  In fact, $65 billion worth of benefits go unclaimed each year by eligible households.  CUCS’ Single Stops have advisors who can help you determine what benefits you are eligible for and will help you apply for these benefits.

  1. Develop a household budget. It’s important to know where your money is going so you can determine if there are ways in which you can cut back in one or more areas and so that you can have sufficient funds available throughout the month.  Advisors at CUCS’ Single Stops can help you in developing a practical budget.

  1. If you fall behind on rent, be proactive and speak with your landlord. Many times, you can work out a payment plan before so that you don’t fall farther behind and risk court eviction proceedings.  If you have an eviction pending, see a lawyer so that you can know your rights.  CUCS’ Single Stops can assist you in developing a plan with your landlord and offer you free legal services to assist you in staying stably housed.

  1. Access free or low-cost resources in your community. CUCS’ Single Stop staff can assist you in finding nearby food pantries and other emergency services.

  1. Don’t forget about tax credits. If you are a low-income household, you may be entitled to both state and federal tax credits.  CUCS’ Single Stops can help you with your tax returns including securing any tax credits you may be entitled to.

CUCS’ Washington Heights and Central Harlem Single Stop programs were both established in 2005, followed by East Harlem earlier this year.  Single Stop’s goal is to maximize the use of benefits and entitlements in order to ensure housing stability of low-income individuals and families and to provide counseling, information and referrals to remove barriers to successful living in the community.  CUCS’ Single Stop Programs are open to all members of the community and together serve more than 1,200 low income households each year.   Based on the success of CUCS and other Single Stop providers in New York City, the program is now going=2 0national through the work of Single Stop USA, a newly created non-profit partially funded by the Robin Hood Foundation.

Golfer Anna Rawson leads the LPGA Tour

Posted by TSUE on September 12, 2008

Runway model and golfer Anna Rawson is tied for the lead after the first round of the Bell Micro Classic.  Rawson, a former Southern California star from Australia, had six birdies and a bogey on The Crossing course at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail’s Magnolia Grove complex. She has missed the cut in seven of her nine tour starts this year.

“I just hit fairways and I hit it close a lot, and then I made the putts,” Rawson said. “I’ve kind of been playing that way for the last four weeks and I haven’t been making any putts. I think the new putter that I got on Monday really helped.”

Boris: “Yes, I read about that. You know what…my wife and I laughed about it. When I’m at the gym, I don’t wear it. It’s a huge ring and cumbersome. When I shower and when I put on lotion…I don’t wear it. Sometimes, after applying the lotion or baby oil, you forget and the phone rings and you run out and before you know it you are at the music festival without your ring.”

Boris: “I said to Gabrielle at the BET Awards, ‘Did you know we were having an affair?”  She said, ‘Oh really?! You are the other one because I’ve been having an affair with someone else too.’

Boris: (After she said that) “The weird thing is I got jealous.  I thought I was special.”

The Fox Television Stations group will launch Debmar-Mercury’s The Wendy Williams Show for a mid-2009 start following a successful multi-week preview in New York, Los Angeles, Dallas and Detroit, announced Frank Cicha, senior vice president of programming, Fox Television Stations, and Debmar-Mercury Co-Presidents Mort Marcus and Ira Bernstein.

In making the announcement, Cicha said, “Everything about the Wendy preview clicked for our stations, from conception to promotion to hitting the air.  It completely broke the mold.  The show is now a proven winner, and we can’t wait to see it debut across the country next year.”

The Fox-owned stations in New York (WNYW), Los Angeles (KTTV), Dallas (KDFW) and Detroit (WJBK) began offering an unprecedented sneak peek of The Wendy Williams Show on July 14. It will conclude its six-week on-air preview on Aug. 22.

Marcus commented, “Our plan has always been to offer stations a proven performer with broad appeal to today’s viewers, as well as a production that has been perfected over the course of 30 preview episodes. Now they will have the chance to launch Wendy far ahead of the crowded pack of new talk shows on tap for fall 2009.”

Through Aug. 13, the program had posted rating increases in key demographics versus the May sweeps, including every key demo in New York and Los Angeles.

“Wendy is an extraordinary talent who has attracted the strongest ratings for a new offering in years and generated enormous buzz around the country—unheard of for a show airing only in four markets,” added Bernstein. “We are grateful to Fox for believing in Wendy as much as we do.”

The Wendy Williams Show is a daily, one-hour entertainment talk show starring New York DJ, syndicated radio host, TV personality and best-selling author Wendy Williams.  Broadcast live from New York, it features Williams’ commentary on celebrity gossip and news events, as well as interviews, fashion and advice segments in which Williams  helps audience members and viewers handle personal life issues involving sex, relationships, money and dating.

Williams noted, “Doing the daily show for the past six weeks has really been one of the most exciting times in my life.  It has given me the chance to be myself while living out my dream and connecting with my fans on a whole new level.  I am incredibly excited about coming back next year, and want to thank the Fox Television Stations group and Debmar-Mercury for all their help in getting this show on the air and making it a true phenomenon this summer.”

The Fox Television Stations is one of the nation’s largest owned-and-operated network broadcast groups, comprising 27 stations in 18 markets and covering nearly 37.34% of television homes in the U.S.  This includes six duopolies in the top 10 markets: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Washington, D.C. and Houston; as well as duopolies in Minneapolis, Phoenix and Orlando.

Debmar-Mercury is a worldwide production and distribution company specializing in syndication, cable, network, VOD/Pay-Per-View and Pay TV.  The company produces and distributes The Wendy Williams Show and, in association with Hasbro, Inc., Trivial Pursuit: America Plays; it distributes Tyler Perry’s House of Payne, American Chopper, The Deadliest Catch, South Park; Family Feud, The Surreal Life family of celebrity-based reality shows, The Dead Zone, entertaining series for educational/informational time periods, and an extensive movie library featuring titles from Revolution Studios and Lionsgate.  Debmar-Mercury is a wholly owned subsidiary of Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF), the leading next generation filmed entertainment studio.
